The Civil War: 1861-1865 – At the Smithsonian Institution, in WashingtonD.C., this series of exhibitions and events commemorates the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War. Though some are permanent, the feature exhibit, “150th Commemoration of the Civil War: The Death of Ellsworth,” is only open until March, 2012. For you history buffs, you’ll love delving into the story of E. Ellsworth as you are taken through the timeline of the war.
The Andres Mertens Galleries for Musical Instruments – The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NewYork, NY, just recently re-opened its gallery dedicated to Western musical instruments. It holds over 200 instruments and has incredible background on all of them, the most famous being the “Batta” cello.
Jim Henson’s Fantastic World– I have to say I am most excited about this one in particular. Currently at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, NY, until January 16th, this exhibition is home to many of Jim Henson’s original iconic puppets as well as props, storyboards, and scripts. I also suggest, before or after exploring the exhibition, that you go see the new Muppet movie in theaters; I fell in love with The Muppets all over again after watching it.
A last bit of advice before heading out on your museum adventures: if you are trying to escape the crowds, its best to avoid anything that may attract young children because most schools are out and parents are looking for any form of entertainment they can find!
